The Breakout Box has finally come to a close, which is sad because it was such a fun project. I really hope someone continues our traditions next year. The Imagination Library Project was definitely our most successful, but the Riley Carnival was the most work. I really hope someone can figure out a way to throw a carnival better than ours next year. I really loved this class and looked forward to it almost every single day. The ability to go out and do actual work in our community instead of just learning within a classroom was so cool. I hope the kids next year carry on our projects and continue to make a difference in our community.

We did it! Caroline Dunbar and I have pulled off a really cool project for elementary kids in our area. We went to Mrs. Mitchell's classroom during our long period this week and the kids loved it!! We had to give them a few nudges now and again but in the end the kids got into the box on their own. The amount of satisfaction felt by both the children and myself at the end of the game was immense. Caroline and I even made an appointment for a neighboring teacher for our next long class. This breakout box is so much fun and I know the kids enjoyed it as well. My partner and I decided to put candy in each of our boxes as it makes getting into the box that much more fun!
Caroline and I have moved on from our trial run on Aliens and have made a whole new breakout box with perimeter and area. We have made connections with a teacher at New Palestine Elementary and plan on taking the breakout box to her classroom on the long period next week. We tested out the box on Mr. Large and (although we gave him a few hints) he mastered the clues and eventually opened the box. Watching Mr. Large open the box was also infinitely helpful as it allowed us to see some kinks or problems we could work out before giving the box to the actual children.
Caroline Dunbar and I are at it again with a brand new project! We are starting breakout boxes for a more fun learning experience. The goal is to take these to elementary school classrooms, but for now we are doing fun trials in the high school classrooms. These boxes will build teamwork and critical thinking exercises and really help the kids think outside of the box (pun intended). Our current box is about aliens, but it is just a trial so no one need worry about corrupting young minds with talk about aliens.
